Copper State Models 1:32: a French airman jumping down from his Nieuport. A multi-part resin figure caught in movement over the edge of the cockpit.
Responsibility details are not available.
A French airman has just landed and is swinging a leg over the edge of the fuselage to jump down into the grass. The modeler is given the moment when the body is half in the machine and half outside: one hand grips a strut, the other rests on the rim of the cockpit and the weight shifts forward. Such a composition lends action even to an aircraft that otherwise just stands quietly on a base.
The types 11 Bebe, 16 and 17 formed the backbone of the French fighter escadrilles in 1916 and 1917. The narrow lower wing with a single spar earned them the designation sesquiplane and gave the pilots unusually good downward visibility. Georges Guynemer and Charles Nungesser both flew these machines; in escadrille N.124 Lafayette, American volunteers fought on them before their own country entered the war.
The set contains resin castings in a raw state. It pays to try dry how the figure fits into the cockpit of a particular kit: the edge of the fuselage is meant to be the bearing point, and a small adjustment of the angle of the arm is therefore usually needed. Separate the sprue gates with a cutting disc or a saw; side cutters damage resin easily and a chip is then hard to make good.
The leather flying suit, the scarf and the helmet are quickly shaded once the primer has been sprayed. A glossy accent on the lenses of the goggles and on the buckles gives the result the momentum that the figure already carries in its pose.
The 1:32 scale corresponds to about fifty-four millimeters and is established for the large biplanes of the period. The figure therefore fits in among mechanics, a hangar guard and other airmen from the same manufacturer, and a scene on a landing ground gains a sense of scale and a human dimension.
