Stencils for the ground-attack version of the Focke-Wulf in a large scale. They mask the blown cockpit canopy from both faces and are complemented by two insignia masks and decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
The F came about by converting the fighter Fw 190A-8 for the support of ground troops. Armor was added under the cockpit and in the sides of the fuselage, racks for bombs under the fuselage and wing, and the armament was reduced to two cannon in the wing roots and two machine guns above the engine. The machines served mainly on the Eastern Front and in Italy, flew from muddy field strips and not infrequently carried hastily applied winter camouflage.
Kurt Tank gave his machine a sliding section blown into one continuous bubble with a thin perimeter frame. A straight strip of tape cannot be laid on such a surface without going wavy in the curve, and every ripple is visible as a tooth after spraying. A shaped cut gets round that problem: the piece follows the curve and only has to be pressed down from the center toward the edges.
Tweezers with fine tips, a new blade for separating the pieces from the sheet, a wooden stick for smoothing and a cotton swab with alcohol. Without degreasing, the film holds on fresh plastic only in appearance and the paint gets underneath it on the very first pass.
Two national insignia stencils and a decal sheet belong to the item. A sprayed cross on a winter finish looks more convincing than a decal, because winter paint tended to be matte and uneven and the glossy rim of a film would give it away at first glance. Spraying pays off even when the machine has the cross partly painted over with field paint: you simply cover part of the stencil and the transition comes out naturally, whereas a decal would have to be laboriously sanded.
