What technical stenciling and insignia are for

Technical stenciling means the small service legends that a real aircraft carries all over its airframe: marks at the filler points, warnings by the air intakes and the landing gear bays, labels on the access panels and figures for the ground crew. In 1:32 scale these details are easy to read, and it is exactly they that make the difference between nicely sprayed plastic and a model that reads as a scaled-down real machine. The national insignia then establish which air force the aircraft belongs to.

Everything rests on a glossy surface

A decal needs a smooth, glossy surface. Matte paint has a microscopically broken texture, air stays in it under the carrier film and a silvered edge appears around the motif that you will never get rid of. So overcoat the areas the decals will go onto with a gloss clear varnish first and let it cure thoroughly. The decal itself then only has to be soaked in lukewarm water for a few seconds, set aside and left until it begins to slide freely on its backing. Slide it onto the dampened spot, align it and blot the surplus water away with a paper tissue, working from the center toward the edges.
