A group item is the fastest way to turn a model on a bare base into a scene. The key is laying it out into an irregular triangle instead of a row, so that the scene can be read from the side too. A difference in height helps as well, even if only a few millimeters above the terrain or at the edge of a low crate, because a uniform plane suppresses the depth of a scene.
Desert light is hard and reflected off the ground, so it lights even the undersides that would stay in shadow in Europe. When painting, therefore, brighten the underside of the chin and the underside of the forearms slightly too, otherwise the group will come across as flat in a display case. To unify the whole set, go over all the pieces at the end with a very thinned light filter, which will harmonize the small differences between them.
