About product

MASTER 1:32 - antenna set for the FuG 218 radar

This accessory is neither a barrel nor a kit but a set of turned metal antennas for a model of a German night fighter in 1:32 scale. It replaces the parts of the antenna array of the FuG 218 radar, which in kits tend to be one of the most vulnerable sections of a whole model. The set belongs to the MASTER range of metal accessories, that is to the same family as the turned barrels, pitot tubes and static dischargers.

Why a metal antenna rather than a plastic one

An antenna array consists of thin rods projecting from the nose or from the leading edge of the wing. In plastic they are so slender that they bend as they are taken off the frame, they warp with heat once they are glued in place and they snap at the first careless touch. Turned metal is straight, holds its shape and survives even a knock when the model is moved. The second gain is dimensional consistency: all the rods have the same diameter and length, so the array looks symmetrical, which with plastic cast in a split mold it usually does not.

Fitting and painting tips

Cut off the plastic antennas at the root and sand the surface down. Drill holes in the fuselage or the wing matching the diameter of the metal shanks: a metal antenna is meant to slide into a hole, not to be glued onto the surface, otherwise the joint will not last. Glue with gel grade cyanoacrylate or epoxy, or bring a drop of glue to the joint with a piece of wire. Fit the antennas at the very end of the build, after clear coating and weathering, so that they are not in the way during masking. Degrease the metal with alcohol and go over it with a primer for metal; a thin coat is enough, since a heavy layer of paint takes the detail away.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of night fighters in 1:32 scale.
  • Modelers whose plastic antennas keep snapping.
  • As an accessory to models finished for a display case, where handling is a risk.
  • To combine with etched sets and turned barrels from the same maker.

The set is an accessory to a model, not a standalone kit. The aircraft model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a turned antenna set for a radar. The MASTER range brings together all the turned metal parts, barrels among them.

The set is intended for aircraft fitted with the FuG 218 radar in 1:32 scale.

Only after the clear coat and the weathering, as the very last step. During masking and sanding they would be in the way and would easily be bent.

Drill a hole and slide the shank into it. A butt joint will not last. Use gel grade cyanoacrylate or epoxy.
