About product

Gloster Gladiator Mk.II, a mask for British roundels 1:32 (MH models)

This set from MH models belongs among the painting masks for 1:32 scale. It is neither a model of the aircraft nor a kit but a self-adhesive mask: you stick it onto a varnished surface, spray over it with an airbrush and once it is removed a circular national insignia is left painted directly in the layer of color. The marking therefore has neither its own gloss nor the raised edge that gives a decal away. The manufacturer cut it for the ICM kit.

The real subject

The Gloster Gladiator Mk.II was a British single-seat biplane fighter of the 1930s and the last biplane introduced in the Royal Air Force. It was powered by a Bristol Mercury radial engine, the pilot sat under an enclosed sliding canopy and the fixed landing gear carried aerodynamic wheel covers. The Mk.II version differed from the earlier variant in its power plant and in details of the equipment. Machines of this type served with a number of operators and saw action even after the outbreak of the war.

Kabuki paper and how well it holds

Painting masks of this kind are normally made from thin Japanese kabuki paper. Its adhesive is deliberately weak: it holds well enough for the mask not to fly off during spraying, but it will not pull off well-cured paint. Let the surface dry thoroughly, then, and do not apply a mask to fresh paint. Before transferring it, bend the paper slightly at the edge, separate it from the backing film and lay it in place. Press it down from the center toward the edges with a wooden toothpick, so that no air bubble is left under the mask. On a biplane expect the insignia often to run across an engraved line or across the curve of a leading edge, and press such a place down with your finger through a piece of soft cloth.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who are building a Gladiator in 1:32 scale
  • Anyone interested in markings sprayed in paint instead of decals
  • Builders of matte camouflage schemes, where decal film would stand out
  • Modelers with experience of an airbrush and thin coats of paint

This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. Paints, glue and the model itself are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a painting mask, that is, an accessory for a model that has already been built. The model itself and the paints are not in the package.

A sprayed marking is part of the layer of paint, so it has no film of its own and no different gloss. On matte camouflage the difference shows at first glance, and the risk of silvering disappears.

Not if you follow the procedure. The adhesive on masking papers is weak, but the surface has to be dry and clean. Do not apply a mask to freshly sprayed paint.

The masks are cut for a particular shape and scale. Check before you buy that your kit matches 1:32 scale and the given version of the aircraft.
