A large and richly detailed injection-molded plastic kit of the American Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat carrier fighter in its early version, in the large 1:32 scale from Trumpeter. It is a big and complex model with a well worked out cockpit interior, engine and landing gear. The box also holds photo-etched parts and a film instrument panel; some sections of the fuselage and of the engine cowling can be left open so that the internal detail stands out. The model has movable control surfaces and a segmented sliding canopy.
The Grumman F4F Wildcat was an American carrier fighter of the early Second World War, recognizable by its stubby fuselage and rectangular mid-mounted wings. The early F4F-3 version had a Pratt and Whitney Twin Wasp radial engine and fixed, non-folding wings. The Wildcats bore the brunt of the first battles of the US Navy in the Pacific and, despite poorer performance against more agile opponents, they did remarkably well thanks to their toughness and to tactics.
Build the large model in subassemblies and use liquid cement for plastic. Finish and paint the engine, the cockpit and the gun bays before you close them up, because in the large scale they are clearly visible. Glue the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue. Apply a primer before painting, spray with an airbrush and complete the subtle US Navy shades with graduated panel accentuation, a wash and discreet weathering. Mask the canopy glazing and fine-tune the open covers last.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
