The set replaces the plastic Hispano Mk.V cannon barrels with metal parts on models of the Hawker Tempest in the Mk.II, Mk.V and Mk.VI versions and on the Hawker Fury and Sea Fury in 1:32 scale. On these aircraft the 20 mm cannon was housed inside the wing and only the tip of the barrel projected from the leading edge, which is exactly the part this set addresses.
The plastic barrel part is thin and long; it distorts easily while excess material is being removed, and sanding marks are hard to get rid of on a cylindrical surface. The metal part is straight, has a clean circular section and stands up to handling and to later work nearby without bending. On a large-scale model the difference is obvious at a glance, because the barrels project from the outline and the viewer has them right at eye level.
Cut the plastic barrel off where it emerges from the leading edge, open the hole out with a drill bit to the diameter of the metal part and glue the part in with super glue. Wash and degrease the metal before gluing and before painting, and use a primer intended for metal, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface. Fit the part at the very end of the build and you will save yourself a bent barrel while handling the model.
It will be appreciated by large-scale modelers who want the armament to match the rest of a well-detailed model. The work is short and calls for no special tools, just a sharp blade, a drill bit of the right diameter and super glue.
