This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:32 scale from ICM captures the Soviet Polikarpov I-16 fighter in the type 10 version and in addition contains a set of figures of Chinese pilots. ICM is known for the quality of its figures, so the crew looks good even when simply built straight from the box. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Polikarpov I-16 was a Soviet single-seat fighter, one of the first production cantilever low-wing monoplanes with retractable landing gear. The type 10 version had stronger armament and the airframe changes of the period. Machines of this type were delivered to the Chinese Air Force in 1938 and 1939, and its pilots fought hard-won air battles with them against Japanese superiority in numbers. The small, agile I-16 is one of the icons of the interwar fighter era.
In the large 1:32 scale the detail of the engine and the cockpit stands out, so it is worth giving attention to the interior before the fuselage is closed up. Use thin plastic cement, treat the surface with a primer and spray with an airbrush. Paint the pilot figures separately and apply the decals over a gloss coat. The short fuselage of the I-16 calls for careful cleaning up of the joints.
