Templates for the glazing of the single-seat version of the Il-2 ground-attack aircraft in 1:32 scale, cut for the kit by Hobby Boss. They include shapes for the outer as well as the inner surface of the cockpit canopy.
Responsibility details are not available.
Ilyushin's ground-attack aircraft had the forward part of the airframe built as an armored bathtub in which the engine, the fuel and the pilot were literally sunk. The first production machines of 1941 and 1942 flew single-seat, because that saved weight. Without a defender at the rear, though, they proved easy prey and losses reached a level that could not be borne for long. A two-seat cockpit therefore returned to production. It is the single-seat form that has the cleanest spine outline of the whole line, and modelers choose it for that. The armament consisted of a pair of cannon and machine guns in the wing, completed by rockets and bombs in small bays.
The canopy on this type consists of several parts, and once it is glued into the fuselage its reverse can no longer be reached. The order is therefore fixed: the shapes go on the inner side first, the frame is painted in the interior shade, and only then is the part fitted and masked from the outside. Anyone who reverses that either gives up on the inner frame or tries to retouch it with tweezers through an opening. A canopy once glued in cannot be taken out without damage, either. It therefore pays to plan the whole sequence of work before the glue is opened.
The model is sold separately; this item is an accessory to it.
