A combined set for the late Il-2M3 ground-attack aircraft in 1:32 scale. It joins die-cut masking films for the cockpit glazing on both faces, two national insignia stencils and, with them, a decal sheet for the supplementary markings.
Responsibility details are not available.
The added gunner's seat shifted the center of gravity of the Ilyushin so far back that the machine was losing longitudinal stability. The solution was elegant: the outer wing panels were given about fifteen degrees of sweepback, which returned the aerodynamic center to where it belonged. The version modified in this way, known as the Il-2M3, formed the backbone of Soviet ground-attack aviation from the Battle of Kursk to the end of the war and was built in tens of thousands.
The glazing is masked from the inside and the outside, two stencils serve for spraying the insignia and a decal sheet covers the rest of the markings. It is this combination that distinguishes the set from the simpler variants, which have no decals.
The division of labor has a clear rule. Large single-color shapes, that is the stars on the wing and on the fuselage, belong under an airbrush, because a sprayed insignia lies in the paint and has no edge. Inscriptions, numbers and fine warning texts, on the other hand, only a decal can manage. Work in this sequence: camouflage, insignia through the stencil, gloss intermediate coat, decals, matte finish. The reverse order would reveal the edge of a decal. Anyone who wants to make the work easier sprays the insignia before gluing the glazing in and saves one application of film.
