Masking of the national insignia of the Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate in 1:32 scale, the version without a white outline. The markings are built up in paint.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set is meant for spraying the national insignia onto a model of the late Nakajima Ki-84 army fighter. The name gives the form without a white outline, that is, the red disc alone. In a large scale it is exactly this simple insignia that is the most demanding on a clean circumference, because nothing draws the eye away from it: there is no outline to hide a slight irregularity.
The Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate, designated Frank by the Allies, was among the best that Japanese industry built in series during the war. An eighteen-cylinder radial engine gave it speed and a rate of climb comparable with contemporary American types, and the armament combined machine guns with cannons. The late machines, however, paid for the worsening quality of production and of fuel, so in the field they often fell short of the figures on paper.
Smooth the base and let it cure, so that the masking holds its shape and the edge does not work loose. Then set a lower pressure and spray at right angles from above, never at a sharp angle to the edge of the circle. Two or three thin coats are better than one rich one. After removing the masking, look the circumference over against the light and level any bleed with very fine wet sandpaper.
A model of the Ki-84 is sold separately, and this is masking.
