Injection-molded plastic kit of the twin-boom P-38L-5-LO Lightning fighter in 1:32 scale from Trumpeter. The set contains about 360 parts on nineteen sprues, clear parts, a photo-etched fret (hinges for the moving surfaces, intake screens, belt buckles), a film instrument panel, rubber tires and metal rods for the ailerons and flaps. The engines are modeled including their internal structure and the flaps can be built lowered. Allow for a really big model: the span works out at 495 mm and the length at 360 mm, so it is worth thinking about the space in your display case in advance.
Among the fighters of the Second World War the P-38 was an exception, a twin-engine machine with two tail booms and the cockpit in a short central nacelle. Its unmistakable silhouette earned it the nickname fork-tailed devil. The L version was the late and most numerous one: it had more powerful Allison engines, better cooling and all the armament concentrated in the nose, firing straight ahead without synchronization with the propellers. Mind a possible mix-up: the early P-38F and P-38G versions look different, with slim engine nacelles and intercoolers in the leading edge of the wing. From the J version onwards (and therefore on the L as well) the intercoolers moved under the engines and the nacelles gained their characteristic deep chins. Check which generation of P-38 you want to build.
Glue with liquid cement for plastic, which is drawn into the joint by capillary action. On a model this big it pays to build in subassemblies: the cockpit and the engines first, and only then close up the booms. Large areas of natural metal need a perfectly smoothed and primed base, because in 1:32 every scratch shows. Apply the metallic shades with an airbrush in thin coats and differentiate the individual panels; gloss coat before the decals and flatten the finish afterwards. The model is heavy, so plan for a solid attachment of the landing gear legs.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
