Painting masks for a large model of the Italian Macchi MC.202 Folgore fighter. The set masks the cockpit glazing from the outer and the inner face and adds one national insignia mask.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Macchi MC.202 Folgore, whose name means lightning, came about by installing a license-built Daimler-Benz V12 in the airframe of the previous type. A below-average fighter became at a stroke a machine that could handle its British opponents over North Africa and over Malta. Characteristic are the slender pointed nose and the asymmetrically set wings, the left half of which was slightly longer to compensate for the torque of the propeller.
The glazing of the Folgore is a completely different world from the flowing British bubbles. It is formed by a system of flat panes set into a dense skeleton of bars, so the boundary between glass and paint is not one curve but a series of short straight stretches that break at sharp angles. Cutting them from tape is theoretically possible, except that every corner is a place where the paint bleeds under. A pre-cut mask holds the whole grid together and its corners are already made.
Behind the pilot's head the glazing continues with a flat panel set into the decking, which is easily overlooked during the build because it lies outside the main canopy. The inner mask allows for it too. The national insignia in this set is a single one, which matches Italian practice, where the fasces was painted on the fuselage and the crosses on the tail surfaces arose by other means than one stencil.
With a dense grid of bars it holds that a heavy coat of paint optically narrows the glass between them. It pays to spray in several fine passes and to lift the mask before the finish has cured completely.
