A decal sheet in 1:32 scale for the reconnaissance version of the Phantom fighter, designated RF-4C. It is a standalone accessory for a model, not a kit. Xtradecal is among the British decal makers that print on a thin carrier film with good coverage of light colors.
The RF-4C was an unarmed photo-reconnaissance Phantom of the US Air Force. It is told apart from the fighter versions chiefly by the lengthened forward fuselage, in which it carried cameras and reconnaissance equipment instead of the onboard radar and the gun armament. Reconnaissance machines tended to be marked sparingly and their appearance was set chiefly by the technical lettering and the warning placards around the access panels, which plays a large part in 1:32 scale.
On a sheet of this kind, small lettering makes up a large part of the area. Cut the pieces out one by one and as closely to the print as possible, because a wide border of clear film always gives itself away on a saturated base with a glossy outline. Use a new scalpel or a freehand cutting blade, as a blunt knife will tear the film. Do not leave small decals in the water for long, otherwise they will release from the backing before you can transfer them; it is enough to wet them and let them rest for a few seconds on damp paper. Transfer them to the model with flat-jawed tweezers and align them with a brush dampened in water. Once dry, check against the light whether any bubbles have been left under the film, and prick any you find with the tip of a knife and press them down.
