The MD-3 is one of the tow tractors that serve with the US Air Force and the US Navy to move aircraft about on the ground. The machine is deliberately low and flat so that it can pass even under the wing of a parked aircraft, and yet it has enough weight to get a machine of several tons rolling. Its name carries the word Mule. On an airfield apron and in a hangar such tractors are constantly on the move and belong to the scene just as naturally as the aircraft themselves.

The tractor is small compared with an aircraft, and that is why every unevenness of the surface shows on it. Before painting, wash and degrease the parts and lay the paint on in thin coats so that it does not flood the fine edges. Choose the color scheme according to a particular photograph, because it differs from one user and one period to another. Traces of service, that is, chipping on the edges, dust on the running gear and oil stains, will turn the model into a working machine; without them the scene looks sterile.
