Zoukei-Mura is a Japanese maker whose large-scale range is what modelers reach for when they want a big and technically demanding project. The 1:32 scale means a model with a span of over thirty centimeters, big enough for work with shades, wear and the cockpit to come into its own. Check the actual contents of the package — the number of parts, the extent of the internal structure or the number of color schemes — against the information on the box.
The Bf 109 G-14 is among the late versions of the G series. It came about as an attempt to unify production, which until then had been splitting into a range of partial modifications, and to bring the proven features together into one standard. The powerplant was an inverted V12 Daimler-Benz DB 605 with a system for briefly raising output, and the armament consisted of a cannon firing through the propeller hub and two synchronized machine guns above the engine, whose breeches called for the characteristic bulges on the cowling. A typical recognition feature of the late machines is the lightened clear canopy with a minimum of framing, which markedly improved the pilot's view.
In a large scale it pays to work in sections: first finish and paint the cockpit and any internal parts, and only then close up the fuselage. Dry-fit the parts, as on large areas that will reveal where pressure or a strip of tape will be needed. Glue with a liquid cement for plastic drawn into the joints by capillary action, sand the joints once dry and rescribe the engraving. Paint over a primer, which will at the same time show up anything unfinished. The large area of the wings will take shade modulation — slightly lightened centers of the panels look convincing, because in a large scale the eye expects more shades. Spray gloss varnish under the decals and unify the whole model with a matte one at the end.
