1:32 N1K2-j Shiden KAI from Dead Design is a masking set for the canopy frames of the Japanese land-based Kawanishi interceptor.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set dealing with the glazing frames of the land-based Kawanishi fighter. The Shiden Kai is among the Japanese machines with a fairly cleanly laid out cockpit: the sliding section has few bars and slides back along the fuselage spine, so once the masks are in place a large continuous transparent area remains. It is with exactly that kind of shape that working by hand with tape does not pay off, because a single crooked cut is immediately visible on a large pane.
The Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden Kai is the reworked version of an earlier machine that arose from converting a floatplane fighter into a land-based aircraft. The first variant carried over a high-set wing and long, troublesome landing gear legs. The rework moved the wing down, simplified the structure and shortened the landing gear, which produced one of the best Japanese fighters of the end of the war. The Allies called it George, and the best-known examples flew with a unit led by experienced instructors that managed to keep up decent results even against American carrier aircraft.
Clean the surface of the glazing and let it dry completely, because grease from the fingers holds a mask unreliably. Press the edges down all the way round, and on rounded transitions work in small sections. Apply the paint in thin coats at right angles to the frame so that it does not creep under, and let it dry properly between coats. After lifting the masks, go over the corners with a sharp wooden stick and carefully scrape off any paint that has seeped in while the finish is still young.
