About product

1:32 Nakajima Ki-27 Ko Nate masking set (Dead Design)

The set holds self-adhesive masks cut to the shape of the parts of a particular type in 1:32 scale. The procedure is simple: you lay the mask on the model, press the edges down, spray over it and take it off once the paint has set. The resulting area lies directly in the paint layer of the model, not on it. With aircraft masking sets it is most often the cockpit glazing and its frames; the exact extent of this package is stated on the box of the set.

A crisp line instead of a brush stroke

Painting the frames by hand can cover the area, but not give a perfectly straight line. Every tremor of the hand shows on the long line of the glazing as a ripple, and the other side of the cockpit then never looks the same as the first. A mask sets the line by machine and you control only the covering power of the paint. At the large 1:32 scale the difference is conspicuous, because a frame here is a few millimeters long and the eye finds a mistake on it easily.

What a mask can do that a decal cannot

A decal is always one layer more. It has a carrier film, which gives itself away on a gloss base by a different refraction of light, and when the film does not adhere perfectly, silvering appears beneath it. Sprayed paint has no film at all, so the transition between the marking and the surrounding area is nil, and further coats of clear and of weathering hold on it just as they do anywhere else.

Usage tips

The base has to be dry, degreased and free of dust, otherwise the paint will run underneath. Spray in thin coats and preferably several times rather than once heavily, because a heavy coat builds a step on the line. Take the mask off while the paint has only just set, and do it slowly, at a shallow angle backward. Spray the glazing frames in the interior shade first and only then in the outer camouflage finish.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want clean glazing at a large scale without brush marks.
  • Builders of Japanese aircraft who collect variants of the Ki-27.
  • Anyone who prefers sprayed markings to a decal.
  • Beginners with an airbrush, for whom a mask makes the first crisp lines easier.

This is an accessory for a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a masking set, that is an accessory to a model you have to obtain separately.

With aircraft masks of this kind the basis tends to be the cockpit glazing and its frames. The particular contents are stated on the box of the set.

A decal has a carrier film, which tells on a gloss finish and can silver. Sprayed markings lie in the paint layer and the transition to the surrounding area is nil.

Yes, it can be done with a spray can or a brush as well. The key is to lay the paint on thinly, otherwise it builds a step on the line.
