About product

1:32 Nakajima Ki-27 Otsu Nate masking set (Dead Design)

An accessory to a model in the large 1:32 scale, not a kit. The masks are cut to the shape of the parts of a particular version of the aircraft, so they seat without long-winded trimming. In sets of this kind the core tends to be the cockpit glazing and its frames, and the particular extent of the package is stated on the box of the set.

The version decides

The Ki-27 was built in two main forms, Ko and Otsu, and the differences also affect the shaping of the cockpit canopy. That is precisely why a mask cut for one version cannot be used on the other without reservation. This set is meant for the Otsu form, and that is at the same time the main thing to check against your model before buying.

Where masking by hand with tape fails

The classic approach, that is sticking tape down and cutting the shape out with a razor blade on the part itself, is slow and risky on a curved cockpit. The knife easily runs into the plastic and in a clear part a score mark can no longer be saved. A pre-cut mask skips that step altogether. Against a decal it also has the advantage that the frame gets exactly the color you have in the airbrush, so the shade and the sheen match the rest of the fuselage.

Usage tips

Before masking, wash the clear part in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let it dry freely, and do not touch it with your fingers afterward. Press the edges of the mask down with a wooden toothpick, not with a fingernail. Spray at right angles to the surface, not at a shallow angle, otherwise the paint gets under the line. Remove the mask with tweezers before the paint has fully cured.

Who the set is for

  • Builders who tell the Ko and Otsu forms apart.
  • Modelers of large scales, where shortcomings of glazing show most.
  • Those who do not want to cut masking tape on a clear part itself.
  • Anyone interested in Japanese aircraft of the prewar and early war period.

This is an accessory for a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The sets are cut for different forms of the same aircraft. This set is meant for the Otsu version.

You do not. The mask works with a spray can or a brush as well; just lay the paint on in thin coats.

In normal use it will not. Take it off slowly, at a shallow angle backward, and do not leave it on the model needlessly long.
