Landing gear bay masks for the Nakajima Ki-43-II Hayabusa in 1:32 scale. They cover the inside of the bay so that the color of the airframe cannot get into it while the top camouflage is sprayed.

A set of masks for the landing gear bays of a Nakajima Ki-43-II Hayabusa model in 1:32 scale. These are not canopy masks and not national insignia: the masks are applied into the openings of the bays and protect their inside at the moment the outside of the airframe is sprayed.
Why a bay is masked
The inside of a landing gear bay tends to be in a different shade from the outer camouflage and is painted earlier, before the model is closed up. When the top coat is then sprayed, an open bay is the biggest trap of the whole build: overspray flows into it over the edge, settles in the corners and the finished bay interior loses its contrast. A covered bay keeps its shade even after the camouflage is finished, so the modeler does not have to go back to it and repaint it with a brush.
The Ki-43-II was a later production version of the light Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa fighter. Its landing gear retracted into the wing, so the bays are clearly visible on a model from below and also with the gear extended in the finished display case; unlike the cockpit interior they are not hidden behind glass.
It pays to keep to this order: first spray the inside of the bay in its shade and let it mature, then apply the mask and only then carry on with the primer and the camouflage of the airframe. The work is in the depth of the part, so have fine-tipped tweezers and a rounded stick ready to press the mask down even in the corners. Guide the airbrush perpendicular to the surface; spraying at a shallow angle lets the stream of paint get under the edge of the mask. Take the mask off only once the last coat has set.
