A masking package for the American Curtiss P-40E fighter in a large scale. Besides masking of the cockpit glazing from the outer and the inner face it contains one insignia stencil and, on top of that, a supplementary decal sheet.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Curtiss P-40E was among the most numerous American fighters of the turn of 1941 and 1942. The Allison V-1710 engine without a turbocharger cost it performance at altitude, but down low it took a lot of punishment and six half-inch machine guns in the wing had a telling effect. It was these machines that carried the famous shark mouth on the radiator cowling, whether with the volunteers in China, with the Australians over New Guinea or with the desert squadrons in Africa.
The glazing is masked from both faces, one insignia stencil is enclosed together with a decal sheet that completes the rest of the markings. The combination of spraying and decals is practical on this type, because a circular roundel is easy to spray whereas inscriptions are not.
The most reliable trick lies neither in the pressure nor in the consistency of the paint but in a sealing coat. Once the stencil is on, spray the whole surrounding area with a very fine mist of the same color that is under the mask. Whatever bleeds will bleed in the shade of the base and will disappear. Only then apply the target shade. The procedure takes two minutes more and saves an hour of repairing a crisp edge on glossy glazing. On a roundel with a white field this step pays off twice over, because white covers worst of all shades.
