A stencil set for the P-47D Thunderbolt in razorback form. Canopy frames from both faces of the glass, three insignia cutouts and an enclosed decal sheet, 1:32 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
Early Thunderbolts with the raised decking behind the cockpit left the factory with an olive drab top and a gray underside. It was a finish built on the experience of a time when it was assumed that somebody would be looking for the aircraft from above over the European countryside. During 1944, though, the balance of forces reversed, the looking was done rather by the American side, and a matte finish began to be more of a burden, as it cost a few kilometers per hour and took the workers time.
When camouflage lost its point, conspicuous markings took over instead: stripes across the wings, striking colors on engine cowlings and rudders. The purpose was no longer to hide but for one's own formation to know who was who. The razorback fuselage is meanwhile still typical for its shape: the cockpit glazing is shorter, but behind it runs a long glazed or covered decking that is masked differently from the later bubble cockpit.
The stencils are cut for the framing of the canopy and go on from the outside as well as the inside, so the frames stay clean on both sides. Three insignia masks make sure that the star with bars arises by spraying and has no glossy film beneath it. Supplementary decals are part of the box.
A sprayed star holds under a matte coat better than a decal, because there is no carrier film underneath to catch the light.
