A pair of finishes of P-51D fighters from the last year of the war on one 1:32 sheet. Both machines carry lettering of their own on the fuselage and complete squadron codes.
Responsibility details are not available.
P-51D fighters escorted bomber formations as far as Berlin and their pilots spent up to seven hours in the air at a stretch. That is exactly why personal lettering appeared so often on the fuselages: for hours on end the machine was its pilot's only home. The sheet brings two such machines from the last months of the fighting over Europe. The first carries a short, somewhat rough nickname of the kind commonly used among fighter pilots, the second a play on words referring to the pilot's name. Both finishes rest on bare metal with a colored nose and rudder, which are precisely the elements the visual impression of a finished model rests on too.
With a Mustang with a polished surface the greatest difficulty is usually keeping the film from being visible. Varnishing the base in two thin coats and letting the second cure properly, ideally overnight, will help. Better to spray the colored areas on the nose through a template and use only the lettering and insignia from the sheet; the thin layer of varnish then stays the same everywhere and a finished model will not be blotchy in reflections. Anyone who wants to go into detail can add the marks of mechanics' feet at the wing root and a faint touch of smoke behind the exhausts. Fighters from the spring of 1945 were harshly worn in service and an absolutely clean surface would look improbable on a model.
