The P-51D version is the form of the Mustang that everybody calls to mind: a cut-down fuselage spine, a fully glazed bubble canopy with a perfect view to the rear and six heavy machine guns in the wing. Under the cowling worked a Merlin built under license, thanks to which the aircraft escorted bomber formations all the way to Berlin and back. The cabin has a markedly different character from European fighters: the instruments are arranged in a regular grid, there are more switches on the side panels, and a reflector gunsight sits in the pilot's field of view. Six barrels were meanwhile not a matter of course, as the older forms of the aircraft carried only four.
The pilot's space in 1:32 is so roomy that on an open model only a really well-executed panel will stand up. Printed panels deal both with the readability of the scales and with the difference in color between the body of an instrument and its rim. The scales stay readable even under a magnifier, which is never true of a hand-painted panel.
Once the panels are in their places, two things are worth considering. The first is a careful matting down of the whole cabin, so that the gloss of the print does not shout against the surrounding plastic. The second is emphasizing the gaps with a dark shade around the panels, which optically sets the individual surfaces apart. Both are a matter of a few minutes and a finished model gains markedly by it, because a visitor's eye goes straight inside through the open canopy. Apply matte varnish dry and in thin coats. The last detail tends to be the glass of the gunsight: a thin transparent sheet is enough and the space at once gains a depth that the panels alone do not provide.
