About product

One name on two different aircraft

The interesting thing about this sheet is not the number of subjects but the fact that one name appears on it twice, each time on a differently shaped airframe. That gives the modeler the option of building the same inscription either on the earlier form with a high spine behind the cockpit or on the later machine with a bubble canopy and a lowered spine.

Hard to Get

The first subject is the P-47D-30-RA with the serial number 44-33576, which carried the code D3 and the individual letter K on the fuselage. It was flown by a pilot named Harris Krause and the machine carried the inscription Hard to Get.

The Down Necker in two forms

The second aircraft, the P-47D-23-RA with the serial number 42-74651, belonged to the pilot Bob Hellwig. It was a machine with the high spine retained and with the fuselage marking A7 and the letter R. The third variant on the sheet is the same inscription carried over onto a Thunderbolt with a bubble canopy, serial number 44-30847. For that one the supplier adds that the painting of a duchess figure on the nose was added only later, that is, after the basic inscription was finished. It is exactly this detail that makes the third subject the most interesting item on the sheet.

How the change of airframe shows

The move from the full spine to the bubble canopy was the most striking alteration to the silhouette of the whole Thunderbolt. The rear part of the fuselage was lowered, the cockpit was drawn further back, and the inscriptions and national insignia had to be shifted. For the builder this means that one kit will not do; the kit manufacturers list both forms separately and they have different fuselage parts.

Form and what to add

The sheet is soaked, the markings slide off it and are transferred onto the surface of the model. Obtain the kit in the matching scale and the paints separately.

FAQ

Because the pilot carried it over from the earlier aircraft to the newer one. The sheet thus makes it possible to build both forms, one with a high spine behind the cockpit and the other with a bubble canopy.

The earlier form has a full spine behind the cockpit, which limited the view to the rear. The later version received a lowered spine and a teardrop-shaped cockpit with all-round visibility.

The supplier mentions it as a later addition to that particular aircraft. Whether it is printed on the sheet is not stated here.

A gloss intermediate layer is recommended. Without it, air is held under the carrier backing and the edge of the artwork stays visible.
