Behind the designation 1:32 Polar explorer N°2 there is a separate figure for a diorama. The subject refers to a man sent out into a freezing land as we know him from photographs of polar expeditions. The number in the name distinguishes the variants within the numbered group, so the figures can be set side by side in a single scene without looking like copies.
The large format lets the face, the folds of the clothing and the small shapes stand out, and in miniature scales there is no room for those. The figure holds up even on its own on a small base as a showpiece of brushwork, but it comes fully into its own only in a winter setting around it. Next to a vehicle or a shelter it also serves as a reference scale by which the viewer judges the real size of the hardware.
First rid the surface of dust and grease with lukewarm soapy water and let it dry thoroughly. Then comes a thin coat of primer from a spray can or an airbrush. Build the flesh tones from a mid color toward the lights and the shadows, and bring the textile to life with a dry brush. Cool blue-gray shadows support the impression of frost better than black. Close the finished work with a matte varnish, leaving only the eyes and the lips with a hint of gloss.
