Masking set for the Soviet Polikarpov I-16 fighter in 1:32 scale. It covers the glazing on both faces and adds one insignia stencil.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Polikarpov I-16 was the first production monoplane with retractable landing gear and an enclosed cockpit to reach front-line service. Its short, broad fuselage earned it the nickname Rata from its opponents in Spain and Ishak from its own pilots. The sliding canopy proved unreliable in practice, a number of units removed it and flew with the cockpit open, so the glazing of one and the same type appears in two entirely different forms.
The sheet carries a pair of masks for the canopy, cut for the outer surface as well as for the underside, and one stencil for the national insignia. The smaller number of insignia parts matches the fact that Soviet stars on this type were applied in a different count and layout than on Western machines.
The glazing is taped over first, then the frame shade is sprayed and only after that the base camouflage of the fuselage. The film will take an overspray of matte varnish and is lifted only once everything has dried through, otherwise an incompletely cured layer may come away with it. Soviet greens tend to cover strongly, so two light coats are enough.
The fuselage of the aircraft was a shell glued up from birch veneer, the wing had a metal spar and a fabric covering at the rear. The surface was therefore not as smooth as on all-metal machines and it is customary to suggest that on a model with a fine texture under the paint. Masks go onto such a surface only after the areas around the cockpit have been smoothed, otherwise the paint gets under the edge of the film through the texture itself.
The item is listed among masking aids for large-scale aircraft models.
