The surface of the Lightning II is not uniformly gray. Around the access panels, on the spine and along the leading edges lie fields of material that absorbs radar waves and that has a different shade and sheen from the surrounding finish. It is precisely these outlines that this set carries on three sheets of thin self-adhesive tape with ready-made cutouts.
The difference between the base finish and the panels tends to be subtle and plays with the angle of view. A sprayed area conveys it more faithfully than a decal, because it has no sheen of its own and no visible edge of carrier film. The shapes are cut for the Italeri 2506 kit - on a competing mold of the same machine in the same scale the dividing seams lie elsewhere, and the shapes would therefore not fit.
First spray the whole airframe with the base shade and let it cure overnight. Only then stick the shapes on, because a fresh finish sinks under the tape. Apply the different shade very thinly, ideally over several passes; the aim is a shift of tone, not a covering layer. Once removed, unify the whole with a matte varnish.
