Vinyl masks for the glazing of the Spitfire Mk IX in 1:32 scale. The canopy is masked from the outside and the inside, and two national insignia masks and decals are enclosed.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Spitfire Mk IX came about as a quick answer to the Focke-Wulf Fw 190. A Merlin with a two-stage supercharger was built into the airframe of the Mk V, which called for a longer engine mount, a four-blade propeller and a second radiator under the wing. The symmetrical pair of radiators is the quickest way to tell the Mk IX from the earlier version in a photograph as well as on a finished model.
Within the type the machine kept changing. The first batches carried the fuselage decking and the canopy unchanged from the previous version, so the division of the frame matches the older cockpit and a tall dorsal area with a small window remains behind the pilot. Only the later production received a cut-down decking and a one-piece bubble canopy, which transformed the view to the rear. That is exactly why with the Mk IX it pays to compare the shape of the glazing on the kit with the pieces in the set before reaching for the airbrush.
The vinyl pieces follow the framing and are applied to clean, dry and degreased glazing. Masking is done from both faces, so that the frame looks sprayed in the interior shade from the inside rather than merely showing through. Two national insignia masks allow the roundels to be sprayed directly onto the surface, which in a large scale looks more convincing than a decal, because the glossy carrier film is absent. Decals are in the box as well, so the two can be combined.
The set is an accessory to a kit. Plastic parts, paints and glue are not in the box.
