About product

Masks for the national insignia Spitfire Mk.I/II 1:32 - type A roundels

A masking set for spraying British type A roundels on a model of the Supermarine Spitfire in the Mk.I and Mk.II versions, 1:32 scale. The note about the older release in the name relates to the Hasegawa kit the set is cut for; it has nothing to do with the year the aircraft came into being.

How a sprayed insignia differs from a decal

A decal is transferred onto a model together with its carrier film. That film is transparent but not invisible - on flat camouflage its edge gives itself away by a reflection, and over an engraved line or a panel joint it easily lifts. A sprayed roundel does not have this problem: there is no film anywhere, the edge is sharp and the surface of the insignia has the same character as the surface of the camouflage around it. You also save on preparation, because a glossy intermediate coat is commonly sprayed under a decal and after it has dried the surface is flattened again.

The real subject

The Spitfire Mk.I and Mk.II were early versions of the British fighter Supermarine Spitfire with the characteristic elliptical wing and the Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engine. The roundels changed in the course of their service - they differed in their color makeup and in the ratio of the circles, so the designation of the type is a distinguishing piece of information for a modeler: a particular form of the insignia belongs to a given scheme, not any at all.

Usage tips

Before you lay the mask on, let the camouflage cure for at least a day; in fresh paint the edge sinks in and after it is taken off an imprint is left. Apply the paint straight on from above, not at an angle across the edge, and keep the order from light to dark between the colors of the insignia. If you are still going to clear coat the model after the insignia have been sprayed, do it only after the masks have been taken off and the edges checked. Any slight running under is corrected with a fine brush better than by overspraying the whole insignia.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the early Spitfire in 1:32 scale
  • Owners of the corresponding Hasegawa kit
  • Modelers who want insignia with the same reflection as the camouflage
  • Those who take the place of decals with spraying systematically

FAQ

No, it relates to the release of the kit the set is cut for. The versions of the aircraft are the Mk.I and the Mk.II.

The masks are cut for a particular kit, and with another model the dimensions and the placement of the insignia may differ. Verify the target kit on the packaging of the set.

Several thin passes are always better than one thick coat. A thick coat runs under the edge and tears when the mask is taken off.
