A set of self-adhesive masks for painting the glazed parts of a model of the Stearman PT-17 Kaydet trainer biplane in 1:32 scale. According to the name it contains masks for two glazed areas, separately for the outer and separately for the inner side, and in addition two masks for the national insignia. It is neither a kit nor a part of a model but an aid thanks to which both the framing and the markings can be sprayed instead of being laboriously gone over with a brush. The maker of the set is Montex.
The Stearman PT-17 Kaydet was an American trainer biplane with a radial engine, a fixed landing gear and two cockpits placed one behind the other. It was built in large numbers as a basic training machine, and after the end of its service hundreds of aircraft went into civil use, where they flew in agriculture and at air displays. The cockpits are not covered by a continuous canopy, so the glazing makes up only small areas, but every inaccurate paint edge shows on them all the more.
Wash the glazed parts first in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap and let them dry freely, so that the mask will hold. Lift it off the sheet with a sharp point or with tweezers, seat it dry first and only then press the edges down. It has proved itself to go over the edges of the mask with a thin coat of clear or of the base color of the model, which runs into any gap and seals it. Spray the paint thinly and rather in several passes. Take the masks off shortly after drying, while the paint is still flexible. Apply the masks for the national insignia only onto a finished and sanded base, so that they have a sharp edge, and spray over them in as thin a coat as possible.
This is an accessory for painting, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package. Before buying, check that the set matches the kit you are building.
