An injection-molded plastic kit of the two-seat Su-27UB Flanker-C in 1:32 scale from the manufacturer Trumpeter. The kit has around 445 parts and is laid out as a large, fully equipped model: two separately fitted out cockpit tubs (the second seat for the instructor means a markedly richer interior than on the single-seat Flanker), a clear canopy separate from the windscreen, metal landing gear with rubber tires, photo-etched parts for the hinges of the movable surfaces and decals on several sheets. The control surfaces - the leading-edge slats, the flaperons, the rudders and the airbrake - can all be fitted deflected. Underwing weapons (short-range as well as medium-range air-to-air missiles) are included too.
The Su-27 is a heavy Soviet air superiority fighter, famous for its agility, its large internal fuel capacity and therefore its exceptional range. The UB version (the letters in the designation denote the combat-trainer variant) is two-seat: it has a lengthened canopy with the seats in tandem one behind the other, a raised fuselage spine and a modified vertical tail surface. It is not merely a training machine - it keeps its combat capabilities and it still serves with a number of air forces today. It is precisely the different silhouette of the canopy that tells the UB apart from the single-seat Su-27 at first glance.
In 1:32 every imperfection of the surface shows - on such large fuselage surfaces it pays to spend time filling and sanding the seams down and then restoring the engraving. Glue with liquid cement for plastic (the capillary kind), clamp the large parts together and let them cure properly. Finish and paint the interior of both cockpits before the fuselage is closed up. Use quality masking tape with torn edges for masking the long canopy. Do the base coat with a filler primer, then with an airbrush - the blue-gray camouflage pattern of the Flanker lives on soft transitions and preshading of the panels, which a large scale rewards.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
