A decal sheet in 1:32 scale for the late versions of the British Spitfire fighter, specifically the Mk.IXe and Mk.XVIe forms. The product is a standalone accessory for a model, not a kit. The manufacturer is the British firm Xtradecal.
The Spitfire Mk.IX came about as a rapid answer to more powerful opponents, when a stronger engine with a two-stage supercharger went into the airframe of an older form. The Mk.XVI was close to it structurally, but was powered by an engine built under license in the United States. The letter e in the designation refers to the later arrangement of the armament in the wing, which differs from the earlier variants both in the placement of the weapons and in the shape of the fairings on the upper wing surface. For the modeler it means that the sheet aims at a particular late form of the type and not at the Spitfire in general.
With the Spitfire a model is often built with weathering, and here the order of the steps is what decides. The decals belong in the middle of the process: first the base shades and the camouflage, then a gloss clear coat, then the decals, and only at the end the washes, the smoke staining and the chipped finish. Anyone who lays a decal onto finished weathering will get a sharp new marking on an old aircraft and the whole thing falls apart. A wash laid over a decal, on the other hand, draws the color into the engraving around the marking and the markings blend in naturally. Before you start the weathering, let the decals dry for at least a day and seal them with a coat of varnish, otherwise the thinner from the wash may dissolve them.
The package contains the decal sheet only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
