About product

TF-104G Martin-Baker seat belts 1:32 — Eduard steel photo-etch

A set of color-printed photo-etched seat belts from the Czech maker Eduard in 1:32 scale, intended for the Martin-Baker ejection seats in the cockpit of the two-seat Lockheed TF-104G Starfighter trainer. It is neither a model nor a complete interior set, but a narrowly focused accessory. What sets the line apart is the material: the parts are made of steel, which is more malleable than the stainless steel used for standard photo-etch. A belt can therefore be shaped, bent and left hanging loose exactly the way it drapes on the real seat, and it holds that shape.

What the set is for

Seat belts are one of the most closely watched things in a cockpit, and plastic kits render them either as molded relief on the seat or not at all. Color-printed belts remove the need to paint the webbing, the fittings and the small buckles. In the large 1:32 scale the difference against plastic is immediately visible, especially on a model with the canopies slid back. The set is cut for the Martin-Baker seats fitted to part of the Starfighter fleet, so the shape and layout of the belts match those seats.

Fitting tips

Cut the parts off with a scalpel against a hard surface and carefully clean up the remains of the tabs so that the printing is not damaged. Shape them gradually with your fingers and tweezers; the steel takes even a slight stretch. Do not paint over them and do not clean the parts with solvent. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) in the smallest possible amount, ideally spot by spot where the belt sits down. Belts look most natural thrown over the edge of the seat and over the cockpit sill, not laid out neatly. Install them only after the seat has been painted.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building a Starfighter with Martin-Baker seats in a large scale
  • Builders who want a realistic cockpit with the canopies open
  • Anyone looking for a quick interior improvement without cutting into the structure
  • Modelers who appreciate malleable steel instead of stiff stainless

The set is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

Steel is more malleable, so a belt can be shaped into a loose, draping form and keeps it. Ordinary stainless is springier and pulls back.

No, they are color-printed. You only paint the seat and the surrounding parts of the cockpit.

It is cut for the version with Martin-Baker seats. On aircraft with the earlier C-series seats the belts look different.

Only after the seat has been painted, so that the printing is not damaged during spraying and handling.
