About product

Photo-etched Yakovlev Yak-9T STEEL seat belts in 1:32 scale

It is a small but striking detail set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard, not a kit. It holds photo-etched seat belts for the pilot's seat for a model of the Soviet Yakovlev Yak-9T fighter in 1:32 scale. The STEEL designation means that the parts are etched from steel and are supplied pre-painted, that is with the color and the fittings printed on. Steel is harder and springier than brass, so a belt keeps its shape after being bent and can convincingly be thrown over the seat so that it looks like fabric lying loose in the cockpit. In the large 1:32 scale the belts are one of the first details a viewer notices in an open cockpit.

The real subject

The Yak-9T was a heavily armed variant of the Soviet Yak-9 fighter of the Second World War with a large-caliber cannon firing through the hollow propeller shaft. Because of the installation of the weapon the cockpit was moved back. The airframes of the Yaks combined a metal framework with wooden and fabric parts, and a liquid-cooled Klimov V12 powered them. The machines served mainly on the Eastern Front.

Building and painting tips

Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, and never break them out, or they will be deformed. Steel photo-etched parts are stiffer than brass ones, so use a bending tool or two blades when bending and press slowly. Pre-painted parts no longer have to be painted; it is enough to bring them out slightly with a dark wash after gluing and to suggest wear on the fittings with a dry brush. They are glued with a minimal amount of cyanoacrylate glue, which you apply with a pin. Fit the belts into the cockpit before you close the fuselage up, and try to give them a naturally careless shape, not a straight line.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want a quick and visible step forward in cockpit detail
  • Builders of a model with an open cockpit in 1:32 scale
  • Those who do not want to make and paint belts by hand from paper or foil
  • Anyone interested in Soviet fighter equipment of the Second World War

The set is not a model nor a kit, it is an accessory for a model sold separately. Glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. The STEEL range is supplied pre-painted, that is with the color printed on. All that can be recommended is a fine wash and a light bringing out of the fittings.

Steel is harder and springier. It bends less easily, but the part keeps its shape after bending, so a belt looks more natural than with softer brass.

It is not. It is a detail set for the cockpit, that is an accessory for a Yak-9T model in 1:32 scale, which is sold separately.

With cyanoacrylate glue applied in a minimal amount, best with a pin or a thin wire. Ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on metal.
