Grass tufts with a 2 mm fiber

Small tufts of grass with fibers 2 mm high in a dry, yellowed shade. A tuft has an irregular outline, so once fitted it does not create a regular grid but growth that looks natural in a scene. It is a finished scenic element: you do not have to scatter it, mix it or apply it electrostatically.

Where it fits

The low fiber stands in for trodden, dry grass along paths, around concrete surfaces, in the joints of paving, on verges and at the edges of buildings. It comes into its own in a military scene as well as in a civilian setting, on a model railway and on a plain base under a finished model. The dry shade suits a summer or autumn scene, and combined with green tufts it gives a surface depth.

How to fit the tufts

• Move the tufts with tweezers; between your fingers the fibers get crushed and stuck together.
• Place them irregularly and in clusters of varying size; equal spacing gives away that this is a model.
• Clear the surface of dust and grease before fitting, or the tuft will not hold.
• If a tuft does not hold on the surface by itself, add a drop of PVA glue (white glue) and press it down with tweezers.
• Once dry, cut the fibers through lightly or thin them, so that the growth does not look like new carpet.
• The shade can be tuned with a fine spray from a distance; apply the paint in a thin coat so that the fibers do not stay stuck together.

Who it is for

For builders of dioramas and model railways and for modelers who want to give a finished model a base. Working with tufts calls for no experience; tweezers and patience in placing them are enough.
