1:43 scale is at home among collectors' cars and commercial vehicles. A model standing on a bare board, however, looks like an exhibit, not like a scene. A couple of pallets by a wall, one under a forklift and another on the load bed of a van turn a display case into a piece of a yard or a workshop, and they take up almost no room.
The key is unevenness. Mix two light wood tones and apply them board by board, so that the pallet looks like a piece that has been repaired. A thin dark shade runs into the gaps and pulls out the structure, while a dry brush lightens the edges. In the places where the pallets are lifted by forks, add rubbing toward gray. Earthy dust on the underside ties the object to its base, so that it will not look merely set down. It also pays to think about what will lie on the pallet: sacks, drums or crates give the whole thing height and break up a flat silhouette. Even an empty pallet stood on its edge has its point, because it covers an uninteresting corner of the base and naturally leads the eye to the model.
