An injection-molded plastic model of the American XM2001 Crusader self-propelled howitzer in 1:35 scale. The subject is a rare guest among modelers: it was a prototype that despite enormous investment never saw series production, so the model offers a subject not everyone has in a cabinet. The letters SPH in the name stand for self-propelled howitzer.
The Crusader was developed in the 1990s as a replacement for the aging howitzers of the M109 line and was to be a leap across a whole generation. It carried a 155 mm gun with fully automatic loading and barrel cooling, thanks to which it was to reach a rate of fire that the crews of older systems could not match. A tracked resupply vehicle of its own was to accompany it, coupling to the howitzer and replenishing ammunition automatically. High weight and cost, however, ran up against the requirement for rapidly deployable forces, and the program was canceled at the beginning of the new millennium before it entered service. The surviving prototypes stand today in collections and are the only way to see the vehicle in person.
Finish and paint the running gear and the lower hull before you close the hull up, because afterward you will not get inside. Watch the alignment of the barrel and even out the seam at its joint at once, because every irregularity shows on a long straight tube. A prototype vehicle did not ordinarily move about in the field, so handle the weathering with restraint: light dust on the treads and gentle accenting of the panels will read more credibly than heavy mud. The flat vertical walls of the turret call for shaded application of the paint, or the vehicle will visually lose its volume.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
