The Mitsubishi A6M2 is one of the best known Japanese carrier fighters of the Second World War. It was powered by the two-row fourteen-cylinder Nakajima Sakae radial and became famous for its long range and agility, paid for with a light structure. The airframe was built by Mitsubishi as well as by Nakajima and machines from the two lines differed in detail; this set is aimed at Mitsubishi production.
The set brings three-dimensionally printed colored interior decals on a decal paper. They cover the instrument panel, the side consoles and other surfaces of the cockpit. The elements have raised relief and finished colors including the instrument lettering, so they take the place of hand painting the small details that are hard to manage with a brush inside a cockpit. It is intended for the A6M2 kit from Border Model in 1:35 scale.
Cut the part out with a sharp blade close to the edge of the print, soak it for about fifteen seconds in lukewarm water and slide it off the backing paper into place. It has no adhesive of its own, so paint the surfaces of the cockpit first, let them dry thoroughly and coat them with a gloss varnish on which the element holds; on a broken-up shape a drop of super glue helps. Do not use a decal softener or a setting solution, the chemicals attack the printed resin. Move the elements with blunt-jawed tweezers. In 1:35 scale the cockpit is clearly visible once the canopy is off, so it pays to work slowly and to lay the elements down one by one.
The set suits modelers who want the interior finished quickly and still legible, and also those who do not trust themselves to paint the instruments. It calls for no cutting into the plastic and no sanding, so even a less experienced builder will manage it.
The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
