On British vehicles of the North African and Italian campaigns the loaded kit is practically part of how the vehicle looks, because the crews strapped baggage, tarpaulins, jerrycans and personal belongings to the hull. AEC armored cars came about from the chassis of a heavy truck and were among the most heavily armed British wheeled fighting vehicles of the Second World War. The Mk.II version received a powered turret with a gun that gave it firepower comparable to a light tank while keeping the mobility and the range of a wheeled vehicle. It was used in North Africa and later in Italy with reconnaissance regiments, where it carried out tasks on the border between reconnaissance and direct support.
British desert vehicles live off the contrast between sand paint and darker, dusty accessories. It pays to paint the accessories separately and to reach for khaki, canvas and leather tones so that the load does not merge with the hull. A dark wash will bring out the straps and the tie-down points, a dry brush will pull out the edges, and a fine light pigment on the lower surfaces will set the whole vehicle into a dusty setting.
