Self-adhesive masks for painting the running gear of the Soviet BMD-1 airborne fighting vehicle in 1:35 scale. The set holds no part of the model — it marks out the area of the rubber tire band on the wheel so it can be sprayed separately from the rim. The masks are cut for the kit from Panda Hobby; the wheels of another kit may have a different diameter, so check the match dry.
The BMD-1 is a light amphibious vehicle for airborne units and its running gear is subordinated to that: five small road wheels on each side, return rollers above, the drive sprocket at the rear and the idler wheel at the front. The essential feature is the hydropneumatic suspension, which allows the ride height to be changed — the vehicle can be set down on its belly, so to speak, or raised, and in either position the running gear has an entirely different geometry. The wheels are small, so the rubber circumference is short and narrow. That is exactly the situation in which lining by hand fails most: on a short arc every millimeter of overrun shows as a pronounced asymmetry, and masking tape cut by hand does not follow a circle.
On small wheels there are three typical mistakes. The first is a coarse brush — the modeler uses the same brush as on a large area and the line comes out wider than the whole tire band. The second is trying to mask with ordinary tape cut into strips: a strip breaks on the arc, pockets form between it and the surface and paint runs under them. The third is painting only on a finished running gear, when five wheels are hidden behind the return rollers and between the track. A mask deals with all three — its shape matches the wheel, it seats all the way around and it is applied to the wheel while that is still loose. Since the position of the hull is variable on this vehicle, it pays to decide on the ride height before painting, so you know which parts of the running gear will be visible in the end.
