On a model of an antiaircraft gun the barrel is the dominant part. It is slender and long and the viewer looks along its whole length, so every inaccuracy shows on it. Turned metal keeps a straight shape along its whole length, its muzzle is genuinely open and its surface smooth, so there is none of the sanding and straightening that takes the most time with a split plastic barrel. On long thin parts, moreover, metal takes ordinary handling and does not bend every time the model is carried.
