A plastic kit in 1:35 scale from Takom. The real subject is the anti-aircraft vehicle designated Flakpanzer V, that is the combination of the enclosed Kugelblitz ball turret with the chassis of the Panther tank. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as a set of injection-molded plastic parts. That it is the version on the Panther chassis is confirmed by the supplementary photo-etched set cut for this very kit, which speaks of a Panther chassis.
The Kugelblitz was a turret design developed at the close of the Second World War for defense against low-flying aircraft. Compared with older solutions, in which the crew stood on an open hull, it had an enclosed rotating turret of spherical shape in which both the weapon and the crew were protected and could aim at high elevations. The armament consisted of a pair of 3 cm automatic cannons. Fitting the same turret to a Panther chassis, that is to a medium tank of considerably greater weight and with different running gear from the earlier carriers, remained at the level of a project and never went into series production. The model therefore captures a design proposal rather than a vehicle in ordinary service.
Work from the running gear up: finish and paint the wheels, the suspension and the tracks before the hull is closed, because once glued a brush will no longer reach between the road wheels. Build the turret and the hull separately; that makes both the painting and the later handling easier. After the base color, add a dark wash into the pressings and rivet lines, bring out the edges with a dry brush and apply pigments only right at the end, from the lower surfaces upward, so that the transition from a dusty chassis to a clean upper surface looks natural. Watch the barrels and the fine detail of the turret during handling; they break off easily.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
