A plastic kit of the French Renault R35 light tank in the less usual version with a turret of the FCM type, in 1:35 scale. The manufacturer is Hobby Boss. The 1:35 scale is the most widespread for armored vehicles, so the model fits easily into an existing collection and into a diorama. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Renault R35 was a French light infantry tank of the second half of the 1930s, intended to accompany the infantry. It had a crew of two, a cast hull and fairly heavy armor for its weight class, but a low speed and a turret for a single man who commanded, aimed and loaded at the same time. Most vehicles carried the cast APX-R turret, but some received a different turret of the FCM type with a welded construction and flat, markedly sloped walls - and it is exactly this form that this kit captures. R35 vehicles made up a numerous part of the French armored forces in 1940 and after the defeat of France they also reached the armament of other armies, where they served in auxiliary roles and as chassis for conversions.
Start with the running gear and the lower part of the hull, seat the parts on a flat surface and let them cure, so that the model does not stand crooked. There is no point in painting the interior in detail if it will not be visible once closed up - concentrate on what stays exposed. The cast hull and turret deserve a fine surface texture, which only the paint will bring out: apply a primer, spray the camouflage with an airbrush and underline the differences between the cast and the welded surfaces with a light brightening of the areas. At the end use a dark wash into the recesses and joints and pigments for mud effects around the running gear; on a low vehicle it is the dusty underside that makes the result believable.
