About product

Quickwheel 1:35 Jeep Willys MB — wheel masks for the Tamiya kit

A masking set for painting the wheels of the light Willys MB field car in 1:35 scale. The set holds no building parts: the masks stick onto finished wheels and separate the tire from the rim while spraying. It is cut for the Jeep Willys MB kit from Tamiya.

What makes the wheels of the Willys special

The Willys is the exception in this whole range: instead of dozens of small road discs it has four large individual wheels and a spare stowed on the body at the rear. The spare wheel is the most on show of all — it sits in a vertical plane, right in the line of sight of a display case, and anyone who paints it differently from the other four spoils the whole model. The tires have a pronounced off-road tread with a coarse pattern that carries right over the shoulder of the tire, so the border between rubber and rim does not lie on a smooth surface but tight against relief. The rim on the Willys is fairly large and clearly visible; on some forms it is painted in the same shade as the body, on others not — and that is exactly why it helps to have the edge certain and straight. Do not forget that one model means five wheels, not four.

Choosing and preparing the paint

A tire with a coarse tread should look genuinely matte, far more so than the rest of the vehicle. The surest way is to lay the rubber shade on in two thin coats and let it dry down to an utterly dead matte; if your paint dries to satin, finish with matte varnish on the tires alone, not on the whole wheel. The relief of the tread can then be picked out with a dry brush a shade lighter, and with pigment rubbed into the recesses if you like. The rim, by contrast, will take noticeably more shine, especially when you paint it in the same shade as the body. Keep the thinning moderate: paint that is too thin runs into a coarse tread and fills it, while paint that is too thick rounds the relief off.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of Allied light equipment of the Second World War in 1:35 scale
  • Builders who want the spare wheel to match the other four in color
  • Those making dioramas who need the wheels in the line of sight of a case to be faultless
  • Modelers working with an airbrush and with a brush alike

This is a masking set, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The Willys carries a spare on the body at the rear, so one model comes to five wheels. The spare is also the best seen, so paint it along with the rest for the shade to match.

Once the base shade has dried, go over the relief with a dry brush a shade lighter. Do not thin the paint too much, or it will run into the pattern and fill the coarse tread in.

It need not be. The tire should look dead matte; the rim will take more shine, especially when you paint it in the body shade. That is precisely why a sharp edge between them helps.

The set is prepared for the kit from Tamiya. With another kit, compare the wheel diameter and the width of the rim beforehand.
