An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet heavy tank JS-3 (IS-3) Stalin in 1:35 scale from Tamiya. The model faithfully captures the low silhouette of the vehicle, the cast hemispherical turret and the characteristically sloped pike nose. The rough surface of the castings, the engine deck grille, the machine gun, the cast road wheels and the suspension are all richly reproduced. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The JS-3 (IS-3 in Russian transliteration) was a Soviet heavy tank developed at the end of the Second World War and named after Joseph Stalin. It was first shown publicly at the victory parade in Berlin on September 7, 1945, and its appearance surprised Allied observers. It was marked by a cast hemispherical turret and a steeply sloped nose drawn to a point, both meant to maximize the resistance of the armor; its thickness on the turret reached around 250 mm. It was powered by a diesel engine of around 520 horsepower and reached a speed of about 40 km/h. The shaping of the JS-3 influenced tank design for many years afterward.
We recommend assembling and painting the running gear before the hull is closed. Support the rough cast texture of the turret and the nose with a base coat over a primer and with washes that bring out the casting irregularities and the welds. Discreet color modulation suits the large armor surfaces, and mud and dust pigments the lower areas and the running gear. For Soviet green an airbrush and a gentle lightening of the upper surfaces work well.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
