About product

Kriegslokomotive BR 52 in 1:35 scale, a Trumpeter kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the BR 52 steam locomotive in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. MIND THE SIZE: for the assembled model the manufacturer states a length of 886 mm (width about 87 mm, height about 134 mm), so the model takes up nearly 90 cm of space. According to the manufacturer the package holds 710 parts on eighteen plastic sprues, plus a clear sprue, photo-etched sheet, flexible vinyl sanding pipes and, crucially, a tender with a coal space and a water tank and eight sections of track bed with rails, ties and ballast. The interior of the driver's cab is reproduced, as is the complete running gear with the valve gear and the boiler with its smoke deflectors (Witte deflectors).

The real subject

Class 52 was the Kriegslokomotive, the war locomotive. In design terms it was a deliberately simplified machine: parts that could be left out went, cheaper materials and easier technology took their place, so that the locomotive could be built fast and in quantity. The result was extraordinary: over 6000 were built, which made it one of the most numerous steam locomotives in history. It hauled military and supply trains all over Europe. It ran in Czechoslovakia too: after the war a great many of these machines stayed there and the CSD listed them as class 555.0. Railwaymen called them Nemky, meaning the German ones. They served there for many years after the war and one machine has survived in running order. For a modeler the BR 52 is unique: a steam locomotive in the same scale as tanks and figures.

Building and painting tips

Build in subassemblies: the running gear with the valve gear, the boiler, the cab, the tender and the track bed. Finish and paint the running gear and the valve gear before you cover them up, because afterwards you will not reach them. Use thin solvent cement on the plastic and super glue on the photo-etched parts. Plain matte black looks dull, so bring it to life: brownish rust on the exhaust and the smokebox, dust on the running gear, coal dust in the tender, staining under the tank. The rails deserve rust, while their heads want polished metal. The model is an ideal base for a diorama with vehicles and figures in 1:35: a station, a ramp, loading.

Who the model is for

  • Railway modelers who want a steam locomotive in a large scale
  • Diorama builders: the only locomotive that matches tanks and figures in 1:35 for size
  • Anyone interested in Czech railway history (class 555.0 with the CSD, the Nemka)
  • Patient modelers: over 700 parts and a finished model nearly 90 cm long

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Large. The manufacturer states a length of 886 mm, a width of about 87 mm and a height of about 134 mm. Count on a shelf or a display case of nearly 90 cm: it is a model that may not fit an ordinary glazed cabinet.

Yes, both. The kit holds a tender with a coal space and a water tank and eight sections of track bed with rails, ties and ballast, so the model has something to stand on and forms the base of a diorama straight away.

Yes. After the war a great many of them stayed in Czechoslovakia and the CSD listed them as class 555.0, nicknamed Nemka, the German one. They served there for many years and one machine has survived in running order.

Because 1:35 is the scale of tanks, vehicles and figures. A locomotive in this scale can be worked straight into a diorama with equipment and people, which is not possible in the usual railway scales.
