The crews of heavy equipment did not carry a spare for show. A torn tire or a wheel wrenched off could strand a machine in the middle of a move, and until a workshop arrived a replacement within the crew's reach was beyond price. On the Leopard 1 spare pieces were lashed with chains or straps to the rear of the hull, to the fenders and with some users to the side of the turret as well. This package holds a pair of such wheels.
A spare wheel is visible on a model from every side, because it does not blend into the outline of the vehicle. At the same time it lets you play with color: a piece carried at the rear tends to be dusted differently from the running gear, an older coat often shows, and sometimes it is instead brand new and gleams. It is just these differences that set a model built from the box apart from a model where a person feels it will drive off in a moment.
The Leopard 1 became the most widespread West European tank of the sixties and seventies. The bet on low weight and speed brought it export success and a long life: a number of users modernized it with armor packages and new sighting and kept it substantially longer than had been expected.
The casting is separated from the rest of the block and the surface leveled. A lashing chain or strap of etched brass or soft wire is worth adding by hand; the package does not include it and it is just that which makes the placement believable.
For the same machine the brand also lists the complete running gear, in an untouched and in a crumbled rendering. The chassis can thus be swapped all at once and the spare pieces used on top as an adornment for the rear.
