The M163 came about by mounting a rapid-fire rotary cannon on the proven American M113 tracked carrier. The aim was to defend units on the move against low-flying targets, which also called for a radar range finder and a distinctive turret with a prominent cover. Practice showed, though, that the machine suited firing at ground targets very well too, and it was in that role that it was used most. The combination of a light tracked chassis and an unusual turret makes the Vulcan one of the most recognizable machines of its era.
The conversion changes the upper part of the vehicle, so it pays to plan the order of work and keep access to the places the turret will later cover. The barrel cluster will take metallic shades and sooting at the muzzle. The M113 chassis is rewarding for mud and dust effects, because the tracks and the underside catch the dirt first. Olive green and a desert palette both make sense on these machines, depending on the scene you choose.
